I have used denatured alcohol in a tube to remove varnish several times. Though it removes the vast majority (90%+) of the varnish, a little touch up with acetone on a cotton ball is often still needed. I have never really tried to save the original wraps on any rod soaked in alcohol in a tube so cannot comment on that procedure. If I am trying to save the wraps I use lots and lots of cotton balls moistened with alcohol rather than a tube full.
