Full Version: Paint coming off!
Rod Building > General Rod Building > Wraps and Finishing

OK, on a previous thread, steeldrifter gave me some advice on taking off TML by carefully using a bit of heat. OK, that worked! But.....the paint is coming off the female ferrule along with the epoxy, actually before heating it. This is a small area on the end, about 3/16". FWIW, it's a Matrix blank. I was going to use Testor's flat black but it had dried up. Next, I tried masking it off and spraying it with flat black. Seemed the spray paint softened the rod paint more!!!!! wallbash.gif I wiped it all off and am pondering what to do next. I'm down to grey graphite. I don't think the graphite has been affected. Any help is appreciated.
I think I quit drinking too early! whistling1.gif

John,

If the non-painted area is at the end of the female ferrule, you can use a strengthening end wrap, starting at the very edge of the open end, to cover the oopsie. Since the wrap at the end of the ferrule is typically 2x or more of the ferrule diameter, it should cover a 3/16 " area. Then you can use a fresh bottle of the Testor's to touch up the rest of the edge.

If you need to refinish the bare area, I would let the finish set up/cure for at least a week before trying to refinish it - even though it was cured when the epoxy was applied, it may have softened due to the contact with the uncured finish and will require time to re-set up. I've had pretty good luck with both enamels and acrylics, but learned the hard way that the instructions on the can aren't kidding when they say wait at least 5 days before another coat whistling1.gif . Same applies to wrapping over the refinished area - give it a week before you wrap and finish it. It once took me 3 weeks to get a white blank right - got some really neat crackling/crazing effects on patches of the blank (more than once) rolleyes.gif , but they weren't exactly what I had in mind for that particular build!

Best of luck!

Hey John, I gotta ask
If your rewrapping that area, why bother???
You could take some permagloss and color it. That will get hard quickly and you can blend that in. I keep several bottles of testors paint on hand. Even if they dry up, you can scrape the bottle and get some kind of color and mix it in. Your only looking for the pigment of the color anyway.

Randy and Pete, thanks for the replies. I'm going to put the rod aside for a while and work on a couple of others. Let my head clear a bit (do you believe in miracles?) and decide on the best way to go. The paint is off the very end of the ferrule up to about 3/16". I could salvage some black paint to give the wrap a solid color in the background as I won't be using CP. I'll try to mix it with some TML and see what happens. Trial run on a piece of dowel, first.
