what would be the best RPM speed for a drying/finishing motor?

how would i determine the speed of my present motor? i used a watch and counted the revolutions for a minute and i counted four. does that mean it's 4 RPMs or isn't it that simple?

You can do a search on 'dryer motor' or 'dryer speed' to get more detailed answers, but slow is generally considered best for drying. For applying finish, faster is considered better. Somewhere in the 20-60 rpm range for finish and your 4 rpm is great for drying. Except to those guys who like to turn by hand.

Hi: Actually what I'm looking for is a motor that I could use as a dryer and a finisher. Would 10 RPMs cover bother bases?

My Pac Bay dryer is 9 rpm, other brands are 6-11, and can be used for both purposes. You'll get sharp edges on your guide wraps more easily with speeds higher than this, and maybe get more guides done before the finish starts to set. A rest for your hand and lots of practice helps with edges. If you're not going to make your living selling the rods you make, these dryers work fine.
Now quit diddling and make a rod, already!

hi Gnossos! Ha! Ha! i've already built the rod. this was the first time i used my dryer turning to apply the finish and it worked great. since i liked it so much, i figured twice the RPMs say 10 to 15, would be even better to apply finish and could act as a dryer at the same time. i just finished a Dan Craft, 10', 3 wt., 4-piece. i can't wait to fish it. i'm ready to built a spinning rod for my nephew next.
take care
