Full Version: Can I apply finish a week after wraps were finished

I applied my threadmaster lite almost a week ago, I think I finished my last coat on Thursday morning. Anyway I messed up the Decal as I thought I could soak it in water and then slide it off like I have with other decals but when I did it it left the backing paper all over the back of the decal. Anyway I had already applied finish to the guides so I finished the buttwrap as well. Now I have another decal and would like to apply it but the wrap below and the wrap above that frame in where my decal goes already have finish on them and look good. The rod has not left the rack yet. My question is when I apply finish over the decal can I put it on like another coat over the finish already on the wraps? I have read that if you scuff up the finish that you can apply over it but with metallic thread under it I am hesitant to scuff. Anyway let me know your thoughts or if I should just leave it be.

You don' t have to file it down, just take the gloss off the finish with 600 sandpaper (you could use a gray scotchbrite, but it would be harder to control). Then clean the particles off with air and/or alcohol, and let thoroughly dry.

thanks. I actually scuffed it a bit and applied a layer this morning. That part looks pretty good so far. Applying finish over the larger blank area where the decal lies is more difficult. I am having some bumpy or wavy areas in there. Only have the first coat on so I am thinking I can work it out on the next couple coats. How long should I wait after applying a coat to hit it with some sandpaper to flatten it out. I am using TM lite and the room temp is about 74.

24-36 hours works for me.
