I am new to rod building and i am in the middle of one but i already have plans for another one. the next one i want to do will have some sort of camo theme. i saw on mudhole that you can get: camo blanks, reel seats, and handles. but they don't have camo guides or camo thread for wraps.
I wanted to do a black rod with a camo handle and maybe a camo wraps on the guides. can you get camo guides?
Is there a thread pattern out there that will appear camo or a company that makes camo thread? i have seen braided fishing line that comes in a camo color (i believe it is some sort of spider-wire). can this be used?
Let me know what you all think.

Sounds like fun. If it were me, I'd use black guides and olive thread.
I've never seen camo colored guides and threads. There is a black and green twist, see
this thread.

Here is one of several companies that can put a camouflage pattern on most anything.

How about marbling the wraps with some green/brown camo colors

You can use the camo braid, but you will have to use color preserver over it before you finish.

Hey Alec . . .
What I did many years ago to break up a thread pattern was to get a permanent marker, maybe brown or black in your case, and while the olive thread is still on the spool, make various marks across the thread and when you wrap it on the blank and guides, the pattern will be random relative to the diameter of the blank.
Either regular or NCP thread will work for this procedure. Then apply your finish of choice. The effect will be similar to the twisted threads on the market but with more of a random pattern.
Do a few tests on a spare secton of an old rod and have fun.

Or you could do transparent wraps with white silk and let the blank show.

those all sound like good ideas. i really like the marbling idea and marking the thread with a felt pen. I am not sure that i want to coat the guides in camo because i am sure that finish would not last long.
but if i were to use the braid what test would you recommend?

Nothing like jumping in a month late, huh?
If it were me, I'd do a green/black holographic wrap and keep the finish on the underwrap pretty thin. I think that would get you the effect you're looking for, and a thing finish won't make it too holographic.

Well, I'm a month late as well.

This is what I did with a little 9' 7 pc 3w. Green blank with med green thread. The Camo underwrap was Realtree tape from Walmart. The thread just about disappeared when the finish was applied. The grip was wrapped with the same tape, narrowed so it would pull into the curves of the grip, and covered with Flex-Coat. The ends of the cork were dyed with USMC Black Feibing's leather dye.
