I've used this CP many times before, but all prior to Gudebrod's change in their formulation. Used to be clear, worked well. Then they changed it to a milky fluid. I hadn't tried it until this week, wanted to keep the wrap colour on my bamboo rod.

So laid down three coats of CP, and first of all, the wraps darkened quite significanly just with the CP, and stayed that way. So already a little PO'd. Then, once the three coats were really dry, I put on some spar varnish. Immediately, despite the CP, the wraps darkened further, patchy translucent, and stayed that way! Had to cut the wrap off and start over. Now, really irritated.

Has anyone else used this Gudebrod new formulation CP with success?

Can anyone recommend another brand? (is there one?)

I've used Flex Coat and not had any problems, so far. Don't use a whole lot of it, though.

I gave up on Gudebrod CP after similar experiences. I've got 2 other brands on hand but haven't had the heart to try it again, or the reason. I'm interested in the responses you get to your question.

Was the thread silk or nylon? (just my curiosity- I have no experience with silk, yet)

I just finished a rod using Lamar's Chromoseal CP. The thread is orange and black twist. I put on three coats of the CP and finsihed the rod with TM Lite (first time using TM Lite). The wraps look great. They retained the color of the thread and no splotches. I guess your mileage may vary, but others might want to weigh in.

The thread I coated was green silk on a cane rod. I am hoping that with enough coats, this stuff will work acceptably, otherwise I will have to cut all the wraps off and start over, which doesn't work quite as well on the cane rod.

I think I will also pick up another brand. I will certainly never use this one again.

Gudebrod CP will also darken nylon & Madrea thread!

I try to figure that in when I select thread color.

So far no complaits.

Doctor Goretex. I like that name. thumbsup.gif

While the Flex Coat brand is also 'milky', I like the results that I've had on my 3 builds. It does darkens the thread to a small degree.

I had the same problem...I wrote Gudebrod a note and told them they cost me 10 hrs of additional work redoing the rod. Of course they never responded back.
I saw previous post on the useless Gdebrod CP and how the new stuff is worthless. My bust for not beliveing them. wallbash.gif
