I am not surprised that the rod broke or where it did. Notice the angle of the butt at the reel. It is pointing towards the fish.

I believe I read somewhere that Marcelo uses scallops to hollow his rods. I might be wrong on that but if he does then the follow obversations would apply. My guess is the break just above the ferrule is in the first scallop above the ferrule. The break at the butt is in the scallop at the start of the butt swell. I would also guess that the scallops are very long compared to the diameter of the rod. That is, a scallop several inches long and then a short dam.

All speculation and nothing against the fine rods Marcelo makes.

Thanks for sharing. I'm kind of surprised that he would use a 7wt. on a river known for 30 lbs. salmon.

you may be right, dunno rally but have a close look in the photo, the female bamboo ferrule is sitll ok, the rod broke above the handle and about 6 inches below the male ferrule, maybe because of hollowing but damn that is one hell of a fish on a 7wt
