Full Version: finish still tacky

I have a little problem. I put some TM and TM lite on an old arrow for practice and the finish is still tacky after 3 days. I mixed and measured it in a cup with graduations and had it it the drier for 3 hrs. It looks good but the finish is tacky. Does it matter that I warmed up the bottles before i mixed it? I dont understand what I did wrong?

Did you use syringes to measure each part out or are you trying to eyeball the measurements with the cup?

Most likely that's going to be the problem right there. Finish is very touchy to inaccurate measurements and you need to be almost exact. Most likely with the cups you feel like your exact, but your probably off just enough to mess with the cureing time. I'd suggest getting yourself some gradulated syringes and retry it and I'd beat your come out good then.

Like Steve says. The smaller the amount you mix, the more critical is precision. If I'm mixing up just enough for a signature area or something small, I count drops. (20 drops = 1 ml)

Not mixing it well is just as likely the cause as not having the proper measurements.

I get syringes at Tractor Supply for 29 cents each. I'm cheap thumbsup.gif but I don't like to strip off epoxy if it doesn't set up right. I'll spend big bucks for the syringes.

29 cents, thats cheap, i think the guy that tried using his wifes turkey basters still has you beat

Thanks. Do you guys clean the syringes after every use or do you stick them in a ziplock and not mix them up? If you clean them, how?

How do you fill them, I don't think they will fit in the mouth of the bottles? Thanks.

Ziplock. I put a piece of colored electrician's tape on each syringe and the corresponding bag. I usually wipe the gooey end off with a paper towel with a little DNA on it. I think the idea of drilling a hole in the cap and leaving the syringes in the hole has a lot of merit, but my storage place is pretty dusty, so I've not done that.

I don't clean them. I cleaned the first set of syringes with DNA and all the markings came off! I took two cottage cheese containers, cut an X in the top and marked them A and B to correspond to the TML bottles. I also marked the plunger so I wouldn't get them mixed up. I empty the syringe, pull the plunger a bit and stick them down the X in the container. Since syringes are so cheap, I'm thinking of tossing them every few rods.
Turkey baster???? How did the turkey taste last Thanksgiving? dry.gif
