Full Version: Applying Finish
Rod Building > General Rod Building > Wraps and Finishing
Trout Nut
Hello all, I was wondering how you apply the finish at the guide feet? Do you apply it at the feet first before you start turning the rod? With the rod turning it seems hard to get it under the corner of the feet. Is there a trick I'm missing? Thanks

TN,
I use a thick needle to apply finish to the sides of the guide where the wrap stops (the "tunnel") as the first step. Don't spend a lot of time, as you're using pot life. I do all the tunnels first, then put the rod into the machine and do the rest of the wraps. It's easier for me to do the tunnels with the rod upright, rather than trying to work on them horizontally. If you work reasonably quickly, you'll still have enough time to do the wraps with the same batch; if you find that your first batch is kicking too soon, do one small batch for the tunnels and then mix a second one for the rest of the wraps.

TN. I'll echo what Pete said. Guys like Pete have taught this newbie a lot!
Don't worry about the amount of Finish that you toss. 2/3rds is my normal waste. As we build more, we get more efishent (yes, I meant to spell it that way). smile.gif
Dang it! It just occured to me that I haven't been on the water in almost two weeks! BRB.
