How do most of you like to wrap the tip top? Do you wrap up to the edge and then stop or do you wrap up onto the shaft of the tip top? I have only built one other rod and wrapped just to the edge and thought it looked fine but am now not sure on what I want to do on this build.

Up to the tiptop unless it is a heavy spin or casting rod, then I may stray if I think it would look right.

Thanks for the reply. The first rod was a small 3 wt fly rod. This one is a steelhead casting rod. I am thinking it would look best wrapped just up to the tip top as it is not a very heavy rod (8-12 lbs). Thanks again.

Rumor has it more guys are not wrapping the tip top at all. I'm too traditional to leave it be.

For the most part I build fly rods, and recommend wrapping up against the tip top to protect the fly line from rubbing against the edge of the tip top tube.

I never wrap on or near the tip top.

I wrap up to the tip top. It gives a "finished" look. Personally, I don't like to look at a rod, starting at the reelseat and go up to the end and see a break in the continuity of the wrapping. Never done any heavy rods but think that roadking and PENZZZ have some good thoughts on the subject.
I'm not the expert that some of the other are, but I also wrap up to the the metal. In fact, I jam the thread against the metal to provide some strain relief. On the other hand, if the tip top ever works loose, and you've wrapped up onto the metal, you'll have to re-wrap it, rather than just re-glue it.
i wrap up to the tip top and extend the thread finish over the tip top a tad. 3-7 wts...
