Full Version: Ferrule Problem
Rod Building > Bamboo > Bamboo Rods - General
Tom Berry
I'm attempting to build my first bamboo rod, and have run into a problem. My problem is that the female ferrule seems to be too large to fit on the butt section of the blank. I'm building a Cattanach Sir D 7042, and got the specs from RodDNA, which said that I need 12/64 ferrules for this rod. However, I'm a bit confused at why the top of the butt section and the bottom of the tip section are supposed to be different thicknesses. My chart says that the rod thickness at the bottom of the tip section should be .2060, while the top of the butt section should be .1660. If anyone can help me understand why these dimensions are different and how to fix my little problem, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks.

They aren't supposed to be. Sounds like your chart is wrong. Did you print it from RodDNA? This is what I get for the 7042:

Thanks for the quick response, Chris. I was looking at a different chart. If you scroll down a little farther in RodDNA, you'll see a couple that say "Cattanach Wayne Sir D 7042".

Ah. I see what you're doing. The chart below should be what you have.

Notice the second column. That is the inch measurement from the tip of the rod (not the tip of the section). You're equating the 45" mark on the tip with the 35" mark on the butt. If you look you'll see the 45" dimensions are the same in both the top and bottom boxes.

In the case of both the tip and the butt you'll want to use the 42" mark (.193") as the center point.

Thank Chris!!
