Full Version: Rough after Color Preserver

I don't usually use color preserver and need help on my current project from those with experience.

I have a hard time with metallic thread, but I just had to add some bling to a rod I'm making for my granddaughter. In order to keep the 2 turn trim bands from getting loosened while I work on subsequent wraps, I decided to apply color preserver after doing one side of the snake guides. (Note to self: line up guides prior to applying color preserver wallbash.gif wallbash.gif )

Now that the first coat of color preserver on the first half wraps is dry, the surface is a little irregular. More rough than lumpy--not like epoxy over missed tag ends. Can I just go ahead and apply Threadmaster, or do I need to resurface somehow prior to doing so?

Thanks in advance for your help.

The Encyclopedia of Dumb Rod Building Mistakes is shaping up nicely, though it's now 2 volumes bigger than Britannica. More opportunities to practice!! bugeyes.gif

The finish will smooth out everything once it is coated.

By the way, if you are using regular thread, are you coating all of the thread or just the metallic? I ask, because you will get a variation in the color near the metallic thread.......not sure if that makes sense.....

However, I think you have already figured out that its probably not the best route. Trim bands with metallics are challenging, but focus on a good tight wrap and don't do what you're currently doing with the CP...IMHO.....this will make it impossible to line up your guides after your wraps are in place.

Good luck.

Thanks, I understand that the CP is not necessary for the metallic and is going on the candy apple thread to secure it for now and later to hide the tags of the silver. And though I'm pretty dense, I'm not beyond learning, once I've banged my thick head against the wall, so I'm adjusting the guide position prior to the CP going on.

Thanks for the help.
