Well, work was slow today so instead of making money I spent some. Found this gem at an antique shop.
9 ft 5 3/8 oz Beans Double L Bamboo rod. Has a nice leather case and a wood dowel in the sock to protect the tip sections. Very straight, alittle chipping in the varnish and one guide foot is knocked out ot the wraps. I think I can re-insert it and put in a little adhesive. $130, how did I do? Anyone have any info on this?

While 9 foot rods are not in such big demand, if it is in fish-able condition, you can't go too far wrong for the price. If that leather case came with it, then you really only paid for the leather case and got the rod for free.

When I first saw it I hoped it was 8 to 8 1/2 foot but no such luck. But it does cast a 5/6 wt nicely. I have 2 7wts. and a cheap 6 wt that is just so so. Hoping this will be a nice trout rod. Anyone have any idea who built this rod?

take good pics of the ferrules, reel seat and cork check. that will help in IDing the maker. White script and sig wrap makes me think maybe Edwards?

Hi Matt, Here are some other pics. Came with a soft leather case from LL Bean, the owner wrote 'AC' "Mt. Shasta" inside the case. Here is a picture of the tag on the bag.

Not sure what the insert is, maybe bakelite?

The winding check may be the same material as the seat. The writing looks to be yellow

Hope this helps to identify the rods maker, date of manufacture, or anything else. Difficult to find any info on Beans rods. Thanks

Looks a little like an Edwards Bristol. Well, at least the writing and the ferrules do. Can't say much based on the wraps.

Then again, the white writing (covered with yellowed varnish) could well be Horrocks Ibbotson. But the rest of the rod looks too nice for H-I.

You might contact Gary Lacey who is now making the LL Bean bamboo rods.

Mike;
Harry's right, it's an Edwards trade rod, the writing and signature wrap show that it's an Edwards and the ferrules are typical of what they used on their trade rods, the ferrules they used on their own rods are very distinctive. You can tell where it is in quality level by counting the guides, the more it has the higher the quality. This should be a nice fishing rod, tho it may seem a bit heavy, even Edwards trade rods were good fishing poles.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the input. I ask all these dumb questions because I like to know the history. I AM going to fish this rod, handles a six wgt. well, may look for a silk line. By knowing the history and value will help dictate its use and possible repair if the unspeakable happens. shocking.gif
So, it is believed to be an Edwards trade rod, would that make it a 30's era rod? The grip is a little short, it has 8 guides and the hook keeper is mounted 90 degrees to the right. It is a little heavy but much nicer than my Monty, casts a lot nicer too. Should I refinish the varnish or maybe just touch up the chips. Don't want to compromise the rod if it has any value beyond a fishing tool.

Sampler, if I don't enjoy fishing it, it may be for sale. Time will tell.

I'd just touch up the chips, wax it and call it good.
