Full Version: Epoxy and wraps
Rod Building > General Rod Building > Wraps and Finishing

I'm looking at an old rod of mine from the 80's and was looking at the wraps
and noticed that the epoxy doesn't extend past the thread onto the blank.

How does one do that and get total saturation of the threads and not have it tapering down onto the blank.

Very carefully! laugh.gif

I really doubt if you can get total saturation with standard two part epoxy. It would have to be something thinner or you would get moisture under the wraps.

I had an old Sage like that and the edges of the wraps were starting to fray. Looked very clean but not as functional imo.

I do it to my rods by choice, but only with wraps that don't use CP. You still get a small amount of wicking onto the blank, but you have to magnify it to see it. I use warmed lite build Flex Coat to soak into the thread as much as possible, applied only to thread surface. Then allow a maximum amount of finish to drip. I get even, thin finished wraps this way.

I've also repaired a number of older rods made that way, and they showed no signs of fraying. I feel it's as durable as wraps that have finish extending over onto the blank.
