So Im gonna be starting to build rods real soon, and I wanted to get back out in the shop to get my hands dirty so im not rusty when it comes time to build a rod. so i made like 6 or 7 pens in the past week or two. its been a few years since ive done some wood working, and now that im out there again i forget how i ever got away from it. it feels great, anyways... just thought id share what ive been doing...

Nice set of slim lines you have there! You should be careful, you'll be collecting wood and build all manner of things before you know it!

Funny, I am actually turning some pens this morning dunno.gif In about 10 minutes. You can get all the stuff you need at Woodcraft or Craft Supplies USA. Both have online ordering. You need a mandrel to fit your lathe, which is a steel rod with the tapered piece on the end to fit in the lathe, the other end threaded and has a nut to clamp the parts on the rod to turn them. Each type of pen has specific sized busings that you put on the rod and turn the wood parts down to the same diameter as the bushings, sand to a fine poilsh and press the pens together in a clamp. It is really pretty simple. You'll need a drill press to drill the holes in the wood parts. The pen kit includes a brass tube that is epoxied into the wood before turning it. I ordered my last batch of stuff from Craft SUpplies USA and am pelased with the quality and service. I got simple pens to make as gifts that run about $5 each and then was selfish and bought the gentleman's pen in titanium to make for myself devil.gif

you CAN also use the lathe to drill the holes... you can get a tapered chuck to fit in the other end of the lathe and do it that way.... i find the drill press method much easier and truer, but if you dont have a drill press, the other method works as well.

after sanding, i use Hut(i think) polish which really shines them up and makes them smooth. the pictures don't really do justice for the polish.
