Full Version: Turning Blanks
Rod Building > General Discussion > Trading Floor

Ok gentlemen I have a ton of stuff and I am getting rid of it but I would like to trade it away for rod building supplies.

I have a bunch and I mean a bunch of turning blanks that I picked up on the cheap when I was buying some tools from a gentleman who was moving his wood shop and I noticed box upon box in the back of his shop full of blanks so I picked them up and now I would like to move them on to those that can use them.

I have up for grabs these blanks i forgot to measure the exact length but I pulled out the narrowest of blanks and took pics of them with a ruler over them so you could see for yourself the width of these blanks I also have several very nice pics of the wood itself so you can see the grain of some and the colors as well.

I have: Spalted Sycamore: 18pcs.
Honey Locust: 13pcs.
Sassafras: 20pcs.
Maple: 32pcs.
Cherry: 40pcs.
Black Locust: 35pcs.
Cedar: 204pcs.
Black Walnut: 180pcs.

I also have 16pcs. of Black Walnut that are between 1 1/4" and 2" squares and about 12" long. Not to mention a bunch of stuff that has yet to be cut and it will be the really beautiful stuff as well with a really nicely figured Walnut stump, some beautiful Box Elder, a very large and Spalted Maple stump and much much more. But it may be a bit on the things yet to be cut as my band saw called it quits and I haven't fixed or replaced it yet.

I am looking to possibly trade for a rod building jig most of all but would consider any other supplies you have to offer or an outright sale for part or all of the lot of cut blanks. So don't be afraid to PM me with offers of any kind.

I will post the pics as soon as I figure out how... If someone could help with this I would be eternally grateful I am a computer idiot and I am lucky to even type most of this.

Steve,
Go to 'Photo Gallery'. Above the galleries you'll see "upload photo". From there just fill it out. They have to be a certain file. (I can't remember what, but it'll let you know.) When you go to make a post, the last 5 photos you uploaded will be at the top of your post.
I hope that makes sense to you, because I just confused myself whistling1.gif

BTW: I'm interested in seeing the Spalted Sycamore. (Save me a couple) thumbsup.gif .

The second from the bottom here
These only have a couple coats of tung oil on them. I've gotten black walnut darker using a spray poly, not for a fishing rod, though.

Thanks Chris, interesting

Ok Froggy I am even more confused than I was before but don't worry I will have my wife who is much more puter savvy than I help me tonight get a few of the photos up. Shoot me your e-mail addy and I will get you some pics of the Sycamore

I have almost 30 pics of all the different kinds of wood and would rather not post that many but if you would e-mail me through my profile I can send them to you or you can PM me you e-mail addy and I will send them out post haste.

As i said when I post the original I forgot to measure the blanks length but did that today and they all appear to be at least 5 1/2" but no more than 5 3/4" long they vary a bit in thickness and are not all perfectly square but the narrowest of them are just a smidgen under 3/4" and the thicker are just under 1". I have a digital caliper if anyone wants some more exact measurements I could get them to you.

Canerod I am currently working on either fixing or replacing my band saw and I don't have any of the Box Elder cut but I will get back with you as soon as I get to it I have some really good pics of the face of a couple logs I will be cutting them out if you want them I would be happy to e-mail them to you. I have a couple extra Maple stumps that are a bit small but very gnarly looking that I will be cutting then as well not to mention the three walnut stumps I have.

As far as the Black Walnut I say "black" because these were all local trees and most guys I have talked to say that the darkest of Walnut comes from Missouri and I can attest that most of the walnut I have seen around here is very dark compared to some others it even gits a bit of a purple hue to it in the denser root ball and crotch areas.

in this you have a piece of Sassafras followed by a piece of Spalted Sycamore, then Walnut, then Honey Locust, end last a Piece of the Cedar.
That is it for the moment let me get a couple better pics to show off what I don't have up already and I will get them here tonight hopefully.
