Greetings all. Yet another board to frequent.

Thought I'd post a pic of the snake makers I completed recently. Another step in my quest to make everything myself. The guides are a pain to work with, but they come out looking very cool.

Nice Lee! Those snakes look perfect to me, great job, but you might want to trim the feet down a bit on a few of them. tongue.gif

LeeO,
Please be kind enough to write the name of tapers in your book so we'll know what they are when we steal them! LOL ive_been_ripped.gif
Nice little maker Lee. I use to make mine but I never came up with a good hammer and anvil jig to make the feet well.
Good luck to you!
Mike

That'd be a Sir D - I figure that is one of the most copied tapers out there.

Just curious, i don't know the tool, how do you make different sizes of snakes?

Hi, Lee!

Good to see you on the forums. The newspaper article on you and Phil is set to run this weekend. Now, about the damage your ugly mug did to my camera equipment... tongue.gif

Karel,

I remember I gathered some drawings of guide making tools posted by some rodmaker I forgot the name.
Here is one of the three files (due to attachment size limitation).
You can easily figure out how you make different sizes.

George Barnes has some pictures and text about making snake guides in his book (Fly Rods Galore). The way the tool typically works is two pieces that spin around a center post. Each piece has a hole that you stick the wire in, then turn the two pieces. Change the diameter of the post, you can change the size of the guide.

Jean Claude,
I'll just got a lot of strange signs when I tried to download the file. Could be my incompetence, but could you please check that your file are ok?

Thanks

Yes I couldn't get the proper file either. There was an article in the Best of the Planing Form on making snake guides as well and how to build the bending jig.

Hey Iso!

I maed 3 makers - 1/0, 1 and 2. The sizes are determined by the diameter of the center pin and the distance the hole for the wire is from the center pin. I got the idea from the rodmakers listserve - forgot who sent them to me. I'll try to dig up the drawings.

The process is easy. Cut some brass hex, clean them up in a lathe. I then cut aluminum rod to the diameter I wanted for the snake. Then I pocketed the brass hex for the appropriate distance between the feet. I glued the rod into on side of the hex. I then tapped the maker for a set screw to hold the wire.

Biggest issue is getting flat feet. I try to beat them flat with a hammer then file them flat. They are trully a pain to work with, but they look great and I don't have to pay S&H every month for guides.

I was able to open them by right-clicking on the link then choosing Open Link in External Application.

To make it easier for those who want to see the files, I uploaded both to my server. You can dowload them here:

Snake 1
Snake 2

Jean Claude,

Thank you for posting these, they are great! If you want to post the others I'll upload them the same way for easier downloading. thumbsup.gif

Hi guys,

Can I enquire as to the type of wire used? where you source it, and are the guides treated post forming (other than cutting feet to length and flattening).

Thanks.

Rolf Jacobsen sent me the plans I believe.

The wire is tungsten from Goldenwitch. Smallparts has it but it isn't much cheaper. They take blueing well, which is all I do to treat them. Of course they also get a coat of varnish.
