Help with Birch Bark Fly Grip (It Cracked)

30 May 2013 - 09:05 PM

I built my first birch bark fly grip onto a Pac Bay Quickline 7 Wt blank, and I am pleased with it, almost.

I finished the grip with polyurethane while still on the turning mandrel, and when I removed it I thought I got it off the mandrel without breaking it. But...

Once I got it glued onto the blank, I noticed there is an obvious crack where the grip parted during the transition from mandrel to blank. The crack is very small, but it is clearly there.

So, please advise, how can I fix it?

I am thinking another coat of polyurethane, mixed with some bark dust, might close the gap but am not sure and I don't want to do anything until I hear from those who know.

I feel dumb that I didn't catch this before I applied the final epoxy to the blank, but then I am rarely accused of brilliance.

Any ideas or suggestions on how to fix this will be greatly appreciated.
