Nate, I've built both ways and don't tend to notice a difference. As this rod was built for my wife's uncle when talking about what he wanted he referenced one of my personal rods which I built with the guide in this orientation. So that's ended up making the decision :)

Thanks john, I need to empty my bench of about 5 other projects then either a new 6wt graphite or a 3wt fiberglass these would be for me (finally ;)

That's a little bit of a loaded question. I am a novice builder, but I can honestly say I cosistently grab the first rod I built(2012) over my manufactured rods. My first rod is far from great the fit and finish is not what I would say amazing , but I did my research and built it to fit me. I spent around 200 in materials when I built that rod and it competes with my few rods of similar weights in that price range. Im sure the folks on here who have built hundreds or thousands of rods can give you a much more in depth answer , but from one novice to another if you know what style of rod you like to fish you will probably be happy.

Thanks for the help!! I'll try this when I get off work. Got to excited for a fishing trip last weekend and got ahead of myself.
