Carl,

Thanks for the advice....

I picked the value 20" out of my arse by holding the blank and reaching for the point where I'd normally grab line to strip it off, then adding 2 inches.

Is there a better method (other than the obvious, which is following the advice of experienced people like yourself!) to figure out a good spot for the first stripper than this "WAG"?

Also, FWIW, the literature I have recommends placing the second stripper about 5 inches forward of the 1st: Does this sound right?

For guides, I have 1 1 1 2 2 3 3 10 12, but can order a 4 if you think it's worthwhile.

Cheers!

Gary

Ah. I see. You're doing the double stripper (line taming guide) thing that Nick mentioned a while back, not substituting a guide for a stripper.

In that case I would use something like 28" (maybe even 30") from the butt as the last guide, drop your number of guides to 9 and split the difference between the 2 strippers. So, your numbers will be:

4 1/2
10 1/16
16 3/4
24 9/16
33 7/16
43 7/16
54 1/2
66 11/16
80

Then, put the sz10 stripper at 80 - 2 1/2" (77 1/2") and the sz12 at 80 + 2 1/2" (82 1/2"). Or something similar. Make sense?

For a 9' rod something like 28-30" is probably average for the stripper distance.

A sz3 to sz10 should work just fine so you shouldn't need to order a sz4 IMO.

Thanks a TON, Sir!

I hate to keep on asking questions when the information is already out there, but I'm just having trouble understanding said information.... It's like I'm reading in a foreign language or something (come to think of it, I guess I am!)

Anyway, thanks again for your help: Your post above makes perfect sense! (Why couldn't Clemens have written it like that??? crazy.gif )

Cheers!

Ok...I've got the reel seat, handle and tip top on. Now I'm looking at the guide spacing and seeing all the info about taping the guides on and test cast/bend for smooth line support. My question is this, What do you do about the ferrules? Do you just reinforce it with tape or go ahead and wrap/finish the female ferrule to prevent it from cracking? dunno.gif

Thanks,
Chucky

The best would probably be to wrap and finish it, but I just give it a couple of good, snug wraps with masking tape.

In honor of Gary and Steve I just uploaded a new version (1.3.1) of Guide Calculator that has a checkbox to add/remove a Line Tamer Guide.

The process adds an extra stripping guide and centers the now 2 strippers over the original placement 5" apart. Or for a 10 guide configuration:

This:
Guide 1 - 4 1/2" - 1
...
Guide 10 - 80" - 12

Changes to this:
Guide 1 - 4 1/2" - 1
...
Guide 10 - 77 1/2" - 10
Guide 11 - 82 1/2" - 12

Does this sound right?

Working fine now.... When I penned the prior post I was getting a message that it was an invalid link (I tried the original link as well with the same result, so I knew it wasn't a typo)

Thanks again,

Cheers!

I don't think that'd work too well Ron. We'd end up either fishing, sitting around drinking coffee or planing cane all of the time. laugh.gif
