Topics I've Started

Newest bamboo build

07 September 2017 - 08:33 AM

This is the third bamboo rod I've made.  (The first was under the expert guidance of Chris Bogart five years ago.  The second had so many problems I don't care to share it here.)

It's a Tom Smithwick (thank you sir) Small Stream, 5.5' for 5 wt.  Matt Draft reel seat, buckeye burl insert from a blank given to me by my good friend Ron Hossack, Joe Arguello agate stripper.

Pictured with the case I made for it.  Also pictured is a case from the same board that I made for a friend.

Home Made Rod Carrier

28 June 2017 - 03:26 PM

I just finished this project to ease the transport of fly rods between fishing spots.  It holds 6 fly rods up to 9.5 feet long with reels attached.  I wanted it to look like the fly rod cases I make.  I put one of my cases in the second picture for comparison.  4 months of work...glad it's done!

Case for a Good Cause

10 April 2017 - 07:25 PM

This fly rod case will be auctioned at the Project Healing Waters Two Fly Tournament at Rose River Farm next month.  Curly maple with wenge.  The maple is much more striking than I captured in the photos.

Birchbark handle with redheart ends, redheart reel seat insert, silk wraps with varnish finish, redheart case with birdseye maple caps and strips.

I cast this on the lawn today and I have to say it is sweet.  I now have four glass 3-wts and I can't pick a favorite yet, but I like all of them.
