First build of the 6' 2wt went smoothly. Very pleased with results.

Starting builds 2 & 3 simultaneously.  A 10' 3wt and a 12' 3wt.

First question... would you use a second stripping guide on either rod, and if so, what size?

 

Second question...  For the 10 footer, does this look like a good guide size/spacing to start with to you?

I don't use anything larger than a 10 for a stripping guide, don't feel it is necessary. As far as the stripper, there is no such thing as a 2nd stripper. Some will call it a taming guide. other will just use a double foot as the transition guide. Looks like a pretty fair place to start with the spacing, but I would definitely follow up with a static test. I would even possibly think about dropping 1 guide off of each one after testing, and may even go to 1/0 running guides

Got the handles done and ferrules wrapped on both rods.  

 

What do you think about color preservative on these wraps? I'm leaning towards none, but not sure...

You should have done some test wraps under the grip and seat areas to determine the effect you want

Many builders put some DNA on the thread in an inconspicuous place- imitates the thread with CP pretty accurately.  I don't think the female wraps need to be that long.  I wrap the length 2X or 3X the diameter of the blank plus the trim wraps.  Others might share their thoughts.

I measured how deep the male end went in and wrapped that far. Figured it'd provide full support.  Bad idea?  Easy enough undoing some at the top to shorten them up.

 

The thread color is a very close match to the blank. Moreso than it looks in photos.

Did some reading and apparently on modern graphite rods the ferrule wrap isn't all that vital.   Guess I'll shorten them since they'll look better.  Just did the first one and it was easy enough to undo it at the top, unwrap a bunch then reverse engineer a whip finish.  Just laid my bodkin against the blank, wrapped over it 5 turn and fished the end up under and out, then pulled it tight and done.

The length of a ferrell wrap is purely subjective in the eye of the builder. Today's blanks do not require the longer wraps that older blanks needed to prevent splitting. In fact, some will argue that wraps are not required at all. My personal preference is to use wraps anywhere from about 1/2 inch wide up to 2 inches wide depending on the size and weight rating of the rod and the look I want to achieve. I don't build salt water rods, but I suppose wraps on those would be larger.

Just go for the look you want and structually it should be fine.

I do about the same a John, my female wraps max out at about 1/2" also ( actually I don't put a ruler to it but might place a piece of tape on the blank and move it around to what looks proportional and follow through accordingly).

 

I also have not built any salt water rods but I would like to and actually I could use one beyond what I presently have, that I may posting about regarding an appropriate blank ( it's for myself but also possibly one other guy as well, I have a big family it could be catchy !).. One thing for sure on the more powerful salt water surf rods, they have a heavy build of thread on them compared with any of my fly rods.

The biggest majority of mine are usually between 1/2 to 5/8. Never had a failure that I am aware of at least

To clarify- not being critical as each builder builds rods according to what they want or what the customer wants.  Do wrap the female ferrules before a static test.  You don't necessarily have to apply CP and/or epoxy but takes stress of the ferrule.

Problem With the guide spacing on the 12 foot 4 piece rod. When I input 13 guides the calculator puts a guide 1/2" below the top ferrule, which doesn't seem like a good idea. Goduster mentioned above that 1 less guide might work, so it I went back to the calculator and put in 12 guides and it puts a guide smack on one of the lower ferrules. What the heck do I do now?

With either setup  12 or 13 just do your ferrule wrap the length you want and then mount the guide and continue wrapping. Here is an example of one I did that 2 fell within an inch or so of the ferrule.

OK, thanks.  This one is calling for it where it would be just below the ferrule, like butted right up again it. I'll move it down a smidge and test it.
