I am really enjoying this whole process. I started reading the Maurer book about Christmas time. Purchased bamboo about 4 weeks ago. My swearingen form came today. My first rod is well under way. Almost done with secondary taper. I am making a Payne 98, Med/light browntone achieved with household ammonia(easy and works well) I hope to glue tomorrow or the next day.
Any advice from more experienced people?
Any questions from other beginners?
I hope to post finished pictures in a few weeks.

Help with Dickerson 8015 as a 3 piece 8 foot
19 February 2015 - 10:30 PM
I found the taper in hex rod data base list. As an 8 ft rod. I assume the taper is for 2 piece but not sure as it does not specify. I want to make it a 3 piece. Also I read in a forum post where someone referred to the 8015 as 8'6" rod???? Also are there 2 different 8015's? Please advise.

Hi all. My name is Ryan. As of today my first bamboo rod I'm making is in progress. I heat treated my strips today. My planing forms are in the mail from Larry Swearingen. So far...got bamboo from bamboo broker, bought some tools like Stanley 9 1/2 hand plane with hock blade. I made a heat gun oven, garrison style binder, and wooden roughing forms. Learning from two books and online videos. Also had privilege to visit an experienced maker(Scott Grady) in his shop.
I look forward to sharing and learning.
