Looking at Mark´s strunning reels ( I´m so impressed Mark!
)I came to think of it:
Wouldn´t it be nice to see what reels you/we are using on our beloved bamboo rods?
As for myself, I´m a Medalist guy. I got my first Medalist 1494 back in -79 and I still got it. Runs silk smooth, but looks like.........well, a bit worn.
and I´ve laid hands on a number of them over the years.
But, as I´m Swedish, I also fancy our domestic reel makes, not so well known, but of good quality and workmanship.
Will shoot some pic´s and post in a minute.......

Orvis Battenkill 3/4 here... An absolute gem that I picked up at a decent price from Chris Carlin.
Cheers!

(please excuse the 'Gill, but the trout are all hiding)
Cool topic and nice reels Mats!
The two main things that I look for in a reel are a good disc drag system and the ability to palm the reel. The classic S-handle designs and most of the Hardys (Bougle in particular) are damn sexy
, but just don't work well for me in the types of fishing I do (I expect to catch hell for this...). So, my reels of choice are Ross Visions, as they are wicked smooth, have a great drag system and look good on bamboo, or Orvis CFOs, again as they have a good drag and both the green and the brown look classy with cane. I have a Forbes Aerial bronze that is beautiful, but has no drag at all. As I use it for ultra-light fishing this doesn't matter much. My only other reel is a Lamson Litespeed 3.5 that I use with my 9/10wt Gatti graphite.
I'll post pictures of the arsenal later this evening.
The polished aluminum one in this pic is the one thats going on my 4wt cane rod when I get it finished. It's a Reddington CT3 reel. I like it because it has sort of a "old time" look to it.
Gary:
I owned a Battenkill disc 8/9 util a few months back and it served me very well! The reason why I sold it was to get the nice Medalist without paint loss on the pic´.
Good looking rod there, by the way. Maker?
Chris:
I know what you mean as I´ve been fishing over your way! For seatrout and salmon fishing, I use those multiplied Mörner reels (sold as Orvis Lord reels in the U.S.) that have a good drag/ antireverse system that´s controlled by the handle.
Can´t wait to see your pic´s guys!

Anybody ever seen or tried the TFO MK I or MK II reel? I like the color and porting. The price is decent, but I saw one sell for $50 a while back on eBay and almost bid on it just to try it. ![]()

Kris who?......Hmm, never heard of...... |
Gary:
Those are the Mörner reels, made by Mr. Bengt Mörner of Gothenburg, Sweden. Unfortunally they are discontinued since years back as the production was not cost effective. They were produced from the mid -70´s until somewere in the late -80´s. They were also marketed in the U.S. as Orvis Lord reels during the later part of that time.
The prices over here for a good reel is about 3000.00SEK wich means somewhere around 400.00 USD I guess, but they seem to go for slightly less than that in the U.S. I´ve seen one on eBay that went for 300.00 USD.
They are multiplying antireverse reels with a drag that´s controlled by the crank handle. Quite complex engineering and they do need maintainance. However, if you own one of these reels, you have a lifetime warranty (yours or Mr. Mörners) for any repair on the reel. I sent both these two to him and he only charged me for the shipping.

Mats,
Thanks for the explanation, although I'm bummed to hear that they're not both cheap and readily available.
I'll keep my eyes open on ebay for them, though: I want one.
You Swedes build some sexy machinery for sure, be it fly reels or jet aircraft (I'm about 50/50 on the Volvo, though! (grin))
Cheers!

You know, I was out fishing last week with a Vision 2 spooled with silk line and figured the reel and line alone were worth $680 retail!!! Yikes.

C'mon Graham... I see you looking. Lets see your stash.
Gary,
Actually no large reels extra. I have a WF8 on one of the Vision 3 spools, and a 7 on another and the CFO IV. The Litespeed is the only big reel and is spooled with a WF10.

I had to post my "arsenal" even if I am suffering from peni... er, I mean "reel" envy!
Left - My beloved Battenkill
Middle - BFR Dragonfly 5/6 (I had to include the extra spool to make it look like I have more reels! LOL)
Right - my Pride and Joy (ahem!) a Shakespeare 1094 (picked up at the PX at Randolph AFB for next-to-nothing, and worth almost every penny! LOL)) It has never seen the water....
Just bought another Orvis and spare spool, but will be a few days before I get my mitts on it.
Cheers!

Chris what is the larger silver reel in the lower left of that pic?
sure looks purdy
I refuse to pull all my fly reels out for a picture
(that may take all day)
Bob
hey Carl I think I see a problem with that Cfo why dont you send it on down to me and Ill take a look at it for you and do some field testing to make sure everythings inline and is working properly
Nice batch of Brits there Mats.
I agree they're too noisy though. The first thing I do with a new reel is to remove the clicker altogether.
Bob - Nobody said all one's reels did they?
![]()
Steve - That is a Lamson Litespeed 3.5. Jury is still out on that one, but the drag is awesome.

Chris.....sure looks good!...let us know what the jury says on her
I just could not resist.
From the left.
Row 1. Low priced GATTI
Row 2. Top end GATTI
Row 3. Dayle " Simplicity" No2, Martins
Row 4. Crown II, STH and a STH in the garage.

Howdy;
Great thread, this was a great way to kill some time with a day of the river.
A list of most of my reels, top row from left, Hardy Prince 5/6(favorite reel), Hardy Marquis 4(nothing sings like a Hardy), Islander LA 3.4, Islander IR3-LA(great reel but to much $$), Lamson Litespeed(fantastic drag system)
Mid row; Bauer LM1(good reel but to quiet),Redingoton AL 7/8, Redington RS2-7/8, Redington RS2-3/4, Redington GD 3/4(I used to guide for a shop that sold redington and got a good deal of all these reels, they are all decent reels with the exception being the GD 3/4 which is a piece of crap)
Bottom row; Orvis Rocky Mountain III cartridge(just a tank of a reel, lots of miles and abuse and still going strong), SA System 2 7/8, SA System 2 89M, BRF Rimfire Cartridge, SA system 2 56-LC
And a couple reel cases that I have made on top.
Steve
Wow! Just tooooo many nice reels guys.
Love those fly reel cases Steve!
I've gotten some use out of your fly wallet this summer.

| Hey, those two silver (bare matt aluminum?) Swedish reels with the funky cranks on them (the 2 rear most reels in your picture) are rather sexy... Can you give me an idea of what they cost? Cheers! Gary |

Top Row: Salmon reels
G. Loomis Venture 7 (Cortland 444SL 425grain sink tip), Redington GD7/8 Extra Spool (Cortland 444SL 425grain sink tip), Redington GD 7/8 (Scientific Anglers Air Cell Supreme 2 WF6F)
Row 2: Okuma Sierra 5/6 (Rio Mainstream WF6F), Scientific Anglers System 2 L5/6 (Scientific Anglers Mastery Wet tip Type III 4 weight)
Row 3: Lamson Lightspeed 1 (Rio Mainstream WF4F), Lamson Lightspeed 1 extra spool (Rio Classic WF3F), Teton Tioga (Scientific Anglers Mastery XPS WF3F)
Row 4: My reel (Cortland Clear Creek WF2F), My reel (Rio Pocketwater PW1F)
The Loomis, Okuma and Teton belong to my brother. The system 2 is at least 25 years old as it was my grandfathers, and it was the first reel I used. I traded some titanium reel seats I built for the lamson.

| Oh MY: Yes he does... And one with a spare spool. If I didn't already owe a certain member here around $500 USD (!) I would be all over them. With any luck, there'll still be some available after I pay "Guido" off Thanks for the link Mats: I'm going to save it for later. (Hey, did you see the Hardy with the agate guide? Sweet, and only $635) Cheers! Gary |

| If you get hold of one of the Mörner/ Orvis Lord reels, let me know and I´ll provide you with Mr Mörners contact info. |
I had to update my photo because I added yet another Orvis (get that Steve? ORVISsssssssssssss!!!) to the growing collection:
Top: Orvis Battenkill 3/4 Disc, Orvis CFO III Disc, Orvis CFO IV Disc
Bottom: Pfueger Trion 1990, Orvis Rocky Mountain III, Dragonfly 5/6 Disc
I didn't need to add all the spare spools this time in order to inflate the collection
Cheers!
Gary (Proud New Orivs Papa)
UPDATE: Oops, forgot one.... Dunno how that could have happened!

Cheers Again!
Gary
Hey, this is fun! I'm a gear hound. Sold about a $1k of stuff this past fall on ebay, this is what's left. Anybody want to take the quiz?
http://www.rodbuildingforum.com/index.php?act=galleryviewlarge&showid=1999 for answers.
Hmmmmm.... Lamsons at the top/right, Tiogas next to them. And a whole bunch of Hardys?
Looks almost, but not quite like my Pflueger 2nd from left at the top, next to 3... Lamsons?
Cheers!
Gary
Hey, no fair: You included extra spools! I gotta take another picture now!
Yep, that's everything, spools and all. I have lines on my shelf not spooled, too.
And, guilty as charged, diehard Hardy fan. I LIKE the noise.
Dave
Sick puppy, am I'm I the only one who feels violated by that picture? It's looking more and more like this site is going to have to start a forum for recovering fly reel junkies!
bring the noise -

chris - no offense, but i've gotten rid of almost all my disc drag reels. i know lots of folks who fish for steelhead and salmon around the world on perfects and bougles - a click drag adds to the sport in my opinion. i do love those visions and san miguels though - i'd fish one in a heartbeat!
i like the old orvis battenkill clicks too -

I didn't realize it, but I must be an Orvis guy too...
Top Row: Redington CT 3/4, New Orvis CFO III, Redington CT 5/6, Orvis Battenkill Barstock II, Anniversary Edition Orvis CFO III.
Second Row: Orvis CFO 123 & X-tra Spool (my personal favorite), Orvis Battenkill 5/6 & X-tra Spool, Hardy Marquis 7, Orvis DXR 9/10, Orvis Mach V & X-tra Spool
There are a few others, here & there but none that get used that often (or worth talking about).
