Rod Building _ The Lodge _ More fly reel pic´s!

Posted by: matsoberg Sep 5 2005, 03:14 PM

Looking at Mark´s strunning reels ( I´m so impressed Mark! bugeyes.gif )I came to think of it:

Wouldn´t it be nice to see what reels you/we are using on our beloved bamboo rods?

As for myself, I´m a Medalist guy. I got my first Medalist 1494 back in -79 and I still got it. Runs silk smooth, but looks like.........well, a bit worn. wink.gif and I´ve laid hands on a number of them over the years.
But, as I´m Swedish, I also fancy our domestic reel makes, not so well known, but of good quality and workmanship.

Will shoot some pic´s and post in a minute....... smile.gif

Cool topic and nice reels Mats!

The two main things that I look for in a reel are a good disc drag system and the ability to palm the reel. The classic S-handle designs and most of the Hardys (Bougle in particular) are damn sexy wub.gif, but just don't work well for me in the types of fishing I do (I expect to catch hell for this...). So, my reels of choice are Ross Visions, as they are wicked smooth, have a great drag system and look good on bamboo, or Orvis CFOs, again as they have a good drag and both the green and the brown look classy with cane. I have a Forbes Aerial bronze that is beautiful, but has no drag at all. As I use it for ultra-light fishing this doesn't matter much. My only other reel is a Lamson Litespeed 3.5 that I use with my 9/10wt Gatti graphite.

I'll post pictures of the arsenal later this evening.

The polished aluminum one in this pic is the one thats going on my 4wt cane rod when I get it finished. It's a Reddington CT3 reel. I like it because it has sort of a "old time" look to it.

Gary:

I owned a Battenkill disc 8/9 util a few months back and it served me very well! The reason why I sold it was to get the nice Medalist without paint loss on the pic´.
Good looking rod there, by the way. Maker?

Chris:

I know what you mean as I´ve been fishing over your way! For seatrout and salmon fishing, I use those multiplied Mörner reels (sold as Orvis Lord reels in the U.S.) that have a good drag/ antireverse system that´s controlled by the handle.

Can´t wait to see your pic´s guys!

Mats,

The maker of this 4wt Payne97 taper is none other than our very own Chris Carlin.

http://www.farnorthrodsmiths.com/

It's as pleasureable to fish as it is beautiful to look at, and the taper is like it was custom-designed with me in mind: This rod almost casts itself....

I bought the reel from him a while ago to mount on a graphite 4wt that I built but when this bamboo beauty arrived I knew that the two were made for each other.

I've thought about getting my hands on an antique reel to mount on this rod but I like the Orvis too much.

Speaking of reels, I'm in the process of buying another Orvis for my half of the 8wt "Steelhead Special" twins that I'm building for my Dad and me.

I was recently talking to a shop-owner and avid flyfisher and he stated that the Trion is, bar none, the best value out there right now, and the only one that has been consistently standing up to the punishment on the West Coast (saltwater salmon) without any failures.

That's a pretty good endorsement, I think smile.gif

I think your probably talking about the reel seat and the grip with the wood on it?

If so, thats Stybalized green wood that I had Les of "Inserts by Les" turn up for me back at the beinging of the year. That rod was actually the first rod I ever built, its a 7wt 9' pac bay steelhead rod. That rod is probably the whole reson I am now "infected" with rod building laugh.gif I was so happy with the way it came out I couldnt stop building biggrin.gif

Anybody ever seen or tried the TFO MK I or MK II reel? I like the color and porting. The price is decent, but I saw one sell for $50 a while back on eBay and almost bid on it just to try it. dunno.gif

Gary:

Those are the Mörner reels, made by Mr. Bengt Mörner of Gothenburg, Sweden. Unfortunally they are discontinued since years back as the production was not cost effective. They were produced from the mid -70´s until somewere in the late -80´s. They were also marketed in the U.S. as Orvis Lord reels during the later part of that time.

The prices over here for a good reel is about 3000.00SEK wich means somewhere around 400.00 USD I guess, but they seem to go for slightly less than that in the U.S. I´ve seen one on eBay that went for 300.00 USD.

They are multiplying antireverse reels with a drag that´s controlled by the crank handle. Quite complex engineering and they do need maintainance. However, if you own one of these reels, you have a lifetime warranty (yours or Mr. Mörners) for any repair on the reel. I sent both these two to him and he only charged me for the shipping.

Mats,

Thanks for the explanation, although I'm bummed to hear that they're not both cheap and readily available.

I'll keep my eyes open on ebay for them, though: I want one.

You Swedes build some sexy machinery for sure, be it fly reels or jet aircraft (I'm about 50/50 on the Volvo, though! (grin))

Actually I drive an old Cummins Dodge Ram, as neither Volvo, SAAB or Scania trucks makes a decent sized pickup........

Anyways, I´ll keep an eye open for you on one of the smaller sized reels. They are just about the same sizes as the Medalist 1495 and 1498.

I wish I could say that it's a new Battenkill LA Chris, but alas, it ain't.

I had to try an Orvis Rocky Mountain: Got a deal I couldn't refuse.

If it turns out to not be up to the task I have in mind for it (8wt XT-51), I'll use it on one of my 4 or 5 wts.... If I throw some WF4F/S on it I figure it'll be good for about 18 miles of backing....

I figure that, despite the fact that it's listed as an "entry level" reel, it'll be just fine, else Orvis would sell it as a "no name" brand instead of an Orvis. dunno.gif

Either way, I'll have another reel to add to the photo wink.gif

A list of most of my reels, top row from left, Hardy Prince 5/6(favorite reel), Hardy Marquis 4(nothing sings like a Hardy), Islander LA 3.4, Islander IR3-LA(great reel but to much $$), Lamson Litespeed(fantastic drag system)

Mid row; Bauer LM1(good reel but to quiet),Redingoton AL 7/8, Redington RS2-7/8, Redington RS2-3/4, Redington GD 3/4(I used to guide for a shop that sold redington and got a good deal of all these reels, they are all decent reels with the exception being the GD 3/4 which is a piece of crap)

Bottom row; Orvis Rocky Mountain III cartridge(just a tank of a reel, lots of miles and abuse and still going strong), SA System 2 7/8, SA System 2 89M, BRF Rimfire Cartridge, SA system 2 56-LC

And a couple reel cases that I have made on top.
